HIV infection and Pre and Post Exposure Prophylaxis
HIV is a virus that attacks and weakens the immune system and can progress to AIDS if left untreated. It spreads through unprotected sex, sharing needles, or from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. Early symptoms—such as fever, fatigue, sore throat, or rash—can be mild or delayed, making testing the only reliable way to confirm infection. Preventive options like PrEP (a daily pill for high-risk individuals) and PEP (a short-term treatment taken within 72 hours of possible exposure) are highly effective when used correctly. If diagnosed, starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) early is essential to control the virus, protect the immune system, and prevent transmission. ART requires consistent use of a combination of medications tailored to the individual’s health. In addition to medication, safe sex practices, avoiding shared needles, and regular medical care play a vital role in managing HIV. With proper treatment and support, people living with HIV can lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Regular testing, education, and awareness are key to prevention and early intervention.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections spread through sexual contact that can affect the genitals, mouth, and throat. Common STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and human papillomavirus (HPV). Many of these infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, often show no symptoms but can lead to serious health issues like infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, or, in rare cases, meningitis. Syphilis progresses in stages and, if untreated, can cause severe neurological problems including stroke and dementia. HPV can cause genital warts and is linked to cancers of the cervix, anus, and throat. While neurological complications from STIs are uncommon, they can be severe and require immediate medical attention. Preventive measures like using protection during sex, regular STI screenings, and HPV vaccination are essential to reduce the risk of infection and complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent long-term health consequences, and anyone experiencing neurological symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, or stiff neck should seek prompt medical care. Seek immediate medical attention for any neurological symptoms, as they may indicate.
